How to Format an SD Card or USB Stick on Linux, Chromebook & Steam Deck
Quick Shortcut: Linux, Chromebooks, and the Steam Deck all have a simple built-in 'Format' button—no command line needed.
On a Chromebook (ChromeOS)
- Open the 'Files' app on your Chromebook.
- Right-click (two-finger tap) your SD card or USB drive on the left sidebar.
- Click 'Format device', select 'FAT32' (for Sat Navs, Cars & Trail Cams) or 'exFAT' (for large video files), and click 'Erase and Format'.
On Ubuntu / Linux Mint (GNOME Disks)
- Open your applications menu and search for 'Disks'.
- Click your SD card or USB stick on the left, click the three dots (or gear icon), and choose 'Format Partition'.
- Select 'Compatible with all systems and devices (FAT)' and click 'Next' -> 'Format'.
On a Valve Steam Deck
- Insert your microSD card into the slot on the bottom edge of the Steam Deck.
- Press the physical 'STEAM' button -> go to 'Settings' -> 'System'.
- Scroll down and click 'Format SD Card' (this automatically sets it up for Steam games).
