How to Format an SD Card or USB Stick to FAT32 on Windows 10 & 11

Quick Shortcut: Why doesn't Windows show FAT32 on 64GB or 128GB drives? Microsoft intentionally hides the FAT32 option in Windows on any card or USB stick larger than 32GB! If you want to skip downloading extra tools, a 32GB card or 32GB USB stick is already FAT32 straight out of the packet.

Case 1: If Your Card or USB Stick is 32GB or Smaller (Takes 15 Seconds)

  1. Plug your SD card or USB stick into your Windows PC.
  2. Open File Explorer (press Windows Key + E) and click 'This PC' on the left.
  3. Right-click your SD card or USB drive and click 'Format...'.
  4. Under 'File system', select 'FAT32 (Default)', tick 'Quick Format', and click 'Start'.

Case 2: If Your Card or USB is 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB (Where Windows Hides FAT32)

  1. Because Windows blocks FAT32 in the standard menu for drives over 32GB, the easiest way is to format the card inside your device itself (for example, inside your Nextbase Dash Cam menu or Tapo/Eufy phone app).
  2. If your device doesn't have a Format button (like a Garmin Sat Nav, Trail Camera, or Car Stereo), use the free Windows tool 'GUIFormat' (FAT32 Format) or use a 32GB card/stick which works straight out of the packet with zero computer setup.

Recommended Plug-and-Play Storage Picks

Plug & Play (Pre-Formatted FAT32)

SanDisk Ultra 32GB microSD / SD Card

Works straight out of the packet in Sat Navs, Trail Cameras, 3D Printers, and older devices that reject 64GB+ cards.

Plug & Play for Car Stereos & CNC/Embroidery

SanDisk Cruzer (Blade / Glide / Fit) 32GB USB 2.0 Stick

Works immediately in car MP3/music ports without 'USB Error' because 32GB USB 2.0 drives come pre-formatted in the exact FAT32 format car stereos expect.
