You MUST get a 'microSD Express' card (look for the 'EX' logo on the card). Nintendo Switch 2 (2025+ Console) uses a microSD Express Card ('EX') rated microSD Express (PCIe Gen3x1). Important: Normal microSD cards from the original Switch will NOT work for downloading or playing Switch 2 games!
The official maximum supported capacity for Nintendo Switch 2 (2025+ Console) is 2TB (tested up to 1TB). For the best balance of price and reliability, our recommended sweet-spot size is 256GB.
256GB ≈ 8–12 big Switch 2 games • 512GB ≈ 18–25 games • 1TB ≈ 40+ games. Choosing 256GB gives plenty of headroom without overpaying.
Standard microSD cards (like SanDisk Ultra or Extreme) cannot install or run Nintendo Switch 2 games. Switch 2 games require NVMe-like loading speeds via the new PCIe microSD Express interface.
Setup requirement: Plug & Play. Power off your console completely before inserting the microSD Express card into the rear slot. Upon turning the system on, the console will detect the Express card and prompt to format it automatically.
Yes. Unbranded or counterfeit marketplace cards frequently spoof their capacity or fail to sustain microSD Express (PCIe Gen3x1) write speeds, leading to corrupted recordings or 'Card Error' warnings. Stick to genuine, branded cards from a reputable retailer to ensure full manufacturer warranty coverage.
